Groundbreaking Ceremony February 3, 2009
Groundbreaking Ceremony February 3, 2009
L to R: Steven Diels Councilman District 4, Linda Duttenhaver Key Contributor, Steve Aspel Councilman District 1, Chris Cagel Councilman District 2, Mayor Mike Gin, Matthew Kilroy Councilman District 5, Pat Aust Councilman District 3

Outfitted in hard hats and wielding shovels, Redondo Beach city officials including Mayor Mike Gin and City Council Member Steven Diels joined representatives from Redondo Beach Library Commission, Redondo Beach Library Foundation and Friends of the Redondo Beach Public Library for a special ceremony to mark the demolition of the old North Branch Library building and the groundbreaking of the new North Branch Library building.

Speaking to a large audience gathered at the North Branch site on February 3, 2009 for the groundbreaking event, Mayor Mike Gin shared the city's pleasure in getting the new facility underway. The Mayor also shared the commitment of the City Council to make the building as environmentally friendly as possible.

Among the guests and speakers at the ceremony, was Joe White, son of former Councilwoman and Foundation Board Member, Marilyn White. The library was Marilyn's dream and she worked long and hard to make the new library a reality. Marilyn lost her long battle with cancer in October 2008. She was remembered by many who spoke at the groundbreaking.

Linda Duttenhaver of the Duttenhaver Foundation and a major contributor to the Library Foundation's capital campaign fund, shared her pleasure in seeing the project started and was glad to be part of the groundbreaking. Scott Anastasi of Anastasi Development, another major contributor to the capital campaign fund, expressed support for the building of the facility and the fact that it will serve such a large portion of the community. Foundation Board Member, Barry Brennan, spoke to the audience about what it has meant to be on the Board from the beginning of the capital campaign and participating with the Foundation and entire community in supporting the project.

The new North Branch Library will be nearly three times the size of the current building and feature expanded technology and computers; a larger collection of books and audiovisual materials; more children's programs; a story area; and much more.

The Redondo Beach Library Foundation continues active fund-raising for the new library. If you're interested in making a tax-deductible donation, or in helping with fund-raising efforts, please contact the Redondo Beach Library Foundation at (310) 937-6676 or info@rblf.org.
