Verizon Donates $25,000 to Redondo Beach Library Foundation
Verizon recently donated $25,000 to the Redondo Beach Library Foundation to be used for computers and associated technology at the soon-to-be-constructed North Branch Library.
"Verizon is happy to partner with the Redondo Beach Library Foundation in support of the computer center of the planned new North Branch Library," said Francisco Uribe, Verizon's Director of External Affairs. "This grant continues Verizon's long-term support for nonprofit organizations that do great work in the communities we serve."

The North Branch library was built in 1949 and has not undergone major renovations since 1960. The new facility will feature a larger collection of books and audiovisual materials, children's programs, story area, and expanded technology, including the computer center.
"Our commitment to increase opportunities in the area of literacy goes hand in hand with our deployment of new technologies," added Uribe.
To date, the North Branch Capital Campaign has raised almost $2.4 million of the $4.7 million needed to build the new library.
Council Gives $1 Million to North Branch Campaign
Construction of a new Redondo Beach North Branch Library and community center moved one step closer to becoming a reality on October 18, when the Redondo Beach City Council approved a resolution to use $1,000,000 of the state's repayment of the Motor Vehicle License Fee (VLF) and Gap Loan to fund the new facility.

In July, the City received $1,128,422.81 representing the State's repayment of VLF moneys borrowed in FY03-04 (VLF Gap Loan). According to the City's Statements of Financial Principles, one-time revenue such as this should be used for one-time expenditures and, most appropriately, for capital improvement.
Replacement of the aging North Branch Library (built in 1949), and adjacent community center is a top priority on the City's list of capital improvements. According to Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin, "This has been an important project to me for a long time. The North Branch Library no longer meets the needs of the community because of its small size, insufficient technology and poor infrastructure."
Councilman Steve Diehl agrees. "The new library is especially important because the northern area of Redondo Beach now houses the majority of the city's youth and senior population," states Diehl. "The proposed new library will be nearly three times the size of the current building and will better serve the population of Redondo Beach, which has more than tripled since the library was built."
$1,000,000 of the VLF repayment funds will be appropriated to the North Branch Library and Hayward Center Capital Improvement Project. The money, along with the $895,500 the City has already committed to the project and the $600,000+ raised to date by the Library Foundation, will bring total funding closer to the $4.7 million needed to build the new library and community center.
Meanwhile, area residents and businesses continue to show their support for the project by donating to local fundraising efforts. A recent fundraiser dinner dance, "Puttin' On the Ritz," was co-sponsored by the Friends of the Redondo Beach Public Library and the Library Foundation. The event raised approximately $14,000. A large portion of the proceeds will go to the North Branch Library fund.
"Puttin' on the Ritz" Fundraiser a Huge Success
The construction of a new North Branch Redondo Beach Library came closer to reality this fall, when the "Puttin' On the Ritz" fundraiser raised approximately $14,000.
This gala event offered guests the opportunity to travel back in time with a Roaring Twenties dinner buffet; dancing to the tunes of the Beach Cities Swing Band and choral group "Ready, Willing and Mabel;" photos with antique cars; door prizes; and silent and live auctions.
Held at the Redondo Beach Historic Library in Veterans Park, the dinner dance celebrated the ten-year anniversary of the Redondo Beach Main Library.

In attendance were Redondo Beach residents and city leaders including City Manager Bill Workman, City Council Members Steve Aspel, Chris Cagle, Steven Diels, John Parsons and Don Szerlip, as well as former Assemblyman George Nakano, and many employees and volunteers at both the Redondo Beach Main Branch and North Branch libraries. Close to 200 guests danced the night away while enjoying terrific food and the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping their community.
The proceeds from the event will be used for the construction of a new North Branch Library, as well as for furnishings and equipment for both Redondo Beach Libraries. Funds are greatly needed to build a new Redondo Beach North Branch Library, which was built in 1949 and has not undergone major renovations since 1960. The new facility will feature expanded technology and computers for public use, a larger collection of books and audiovisual materials, children's programs, story area, and meeting room.
